Corps of Engineers Projects in North Carolina

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, one of the nation’s largest providers of outdoor recreation, operates more than 2,500 recreation areas at 456 projects (mostly lakes) and leases another 1,800 sites to state and local park and recreation authorities or private interests. The Corps’ Wilmington District operates six sites in North Carolina and two in Virginia.

The 13,900-acre lake is also home to nine state recreation areas. The Corps of Engineers has a visitors center and an observation deck at the dam, and offers bank fishing below the spillway.

Paved boat launches and canoe launches are available at three sites on the improved Cape Fear River channel between Wilmington and Fayetteville, along with bank fishing, picnic areas with grills, water fountains and restrooms. They are in Bladen County off N.C. 87. Lock and Dam No. 1 is about 27 miles southeast of Elizabethtown. Its Rock Arch Rapids Fish Passage, completed in May 2013, is a fish ladder allowing fish to migrate over the dam, which is the first of its kind on the East Coast and includes a fishing pier. Lock and Dam No. 2 is about 1 mile southeast of Elizabethtown, then 1 mile northeast on a state road to the lock. William O. The 12,500-acre lake is also home to seven state recreation areas. The Corps of Engineers offers bank and dock fishing in the dam’s tailrace area, plus nature trails and a visitors center.

The several recreation areas at Kerr Scott include 10 day use areas, three family-style campgrounds (with electricity, water and showers), seven boat ramps, a marina, an archery course and more than 32 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking (including a segment of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail) at this lake in the Yadkin River Valley foothills.
