The military bases in North Carolina offer a variety of outdoor recreation sites for individuals connected to the military, including campgrounds and recreation areas with rentals at the beach.

Recreation areas at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, Fort Fisher (Air Force), MCAS Cherry Point, Onslow Beach (Camp Lejeune) and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base are primarily about camping and are for active duty and retired military. Find details about what they offer here.

The Smith Lake Rec Area includes a swiming beach; inflatable in-water obstacle course; pedal boat, stand-up paddleboard and kayak rentals; fishing; mountain biking trails (and bike rentals); hiking trails; disc golf; picnic grounds; ADA playgrounds; volleyball and basketball courts; and an Army Travel Campground. Admission fees and fees for specific activities are set yearly. The rec area is open to individuals with DOD identfication cards and guests (up to four guests per DOD ID cardholder).
