Department of Defense Parks in North Carolina

The military bases in North Carolina offer a variety of outdoor recreation sites for individuals connected to the military, including campgrounds and recreation areas with rentals at the beach. One large park and lake at Fort Bragg is open to civilians.

Recreation areas at U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, Fort Fisher (Air Force), MCAS Cherry Point, Onslow Beach (Camp Lejeune) and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base are primarily about camping and are for active duty and retired military. Find details about what they offer here.

The park and beach at Smith Lake are open to the public. In addition to swimming, the beach has a playground, children’s waterslide, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, picnic tables and grills, dressing rooms, and pavilions that can be rented. The park also offers camping for tents and RVs, cabins, and hiking and mountain bike trails. Admission fees and fees for specific activities are set yearly.
