Glenn Falls
We walked to only the first of three falls at the Glenn Falls site. The top of the falls is about a quarter mile in on a moderate trail, and the trail to the other two is rated as difficult, according to Mark Morrison’s “Waterfall Walks and Drives in the Great Smoky Mountains & Western Carolinas.” Morrison rates the upper falls a 6, the middle falls an 8 and the lower falls a 2.
The top of the falls presents a nice view of the Blue Valley and Raybun Bald (elev. 4,696), the second-tallest peak in Georgia.
We learned that Glenn Falls is a popular rappelling site. The rappeller here, who went after another group descended, is a 15-year-old girl. Her mother, who was watching, said that her daughter and husband go rappelling every vacation and have done so since her daughter was 9. (We didn’t get their names or permission to post their likenesses, so we’re not using a photo that would ID her by sight.)
Glenn Falls is just outside of Highlands, on SR 1618 off of N.C. 106. Highlands is in southeast Macon County.
