This is absolutely not an endorsement, but the Lake Powhatan Campground in the Pisgah National Forest near Asheville now offers 12 fully furnished “glamping” tents for those who don’t care to rough it while in the forest overnight.
“Experience nature and outdoor recreation without sacrificing the comforts and luxuries of home,” says Recreation.gov, the portal for reserving a site.
Your glamping tent is set up and ready upon your arrival, an email from Recreation.gov promises, with “a comfortable bed, coffee maker, cooler, charging station, and other amenities you’d expect at home or from a hotel.”
Each custom-designed tent provides 12×16-feet of space to accommodate up to four people and “a queen bed dressed with cozy linens (sheets, comforter and pillows included),” says Pisgah Hospitality Partners, the concessionaire for Lake Powhatan Recreation Area. A foldable cot, which can be tucked under the bed when not in use, is also provided. The tents also have a bedside tables, raised and covered front porch, a couple of chairs and a weatherproof fly for “extra shelter from the rain.”
Each site also has a picnic table and fire ring. Unfortunately, bathrooms, which have flush toilets and hot showers, are shared with other campers and glampers.
The glamping sites are the upper Hardtime Loop, one of four loops in the campground with a total of 97 sites for tent and RV camping.
For the 2019 season, glamping fees are $129 per night.
Lake Powhatan Recreation Area, including a swimming lake with a beach and lifeguard, boat rentals and fishing, is 10 minutes from Asheville, and the campground borders the 6,000-acre Bent Creek Experimental Forest, a popular mountain biking destination.
