William O. Huske Lock & Dam
It’s a mile and a half down a dirt road, but once you get to the William O. Huske Lock & Dam, there’s a large, shaded picnic grounds on the Cape Fear River.
In addition to the picnic grounds, the Corps of Engineers site has a concrete boat ramp and plenty of room for bank fishing. They also have restrooms, and the free recreation area is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, though camping is not available.
The locks are the point of the complex, but you can’t really see them from the bank, and they are fenced off for obvious safety reasons. (Go to the Corps site for lock schedules, requirements and reservation contacts.)
William O. Huske Lock & Dam is located in the northwest corner of Bladen County just south of the Cumberland County line, off of N.C. 87 at Tolars Landing.
