Campgrounds, cabins, the swiming pool, some trails and other amenities at Morrow Mountain State Park were to close June 13, 2022, as an extensive slate of renovations and construction began. Morrow Mountain is in Stanly County, six miles east of Albemarle.
A June 2022 news release announcing the closure said “the park pool will remain closed this season” and “hikers and equestrians can expect periodic trail closures … for the next 12 months” but provided no timeframe for other closures. It is no longer available, but a blog post from October 2022 lists closed facilities.
Closures, renovations and construction are to include:
- The park’s three family campgrounds for full renovations of shower houses.
- Family vacation cabins for full renovations.
- “Several” new camper cabins. Camper cabins do not have indoor plumbing and are typically located near campground bathhouses.
- Pool renovation and splash pad construction.
- Over 14 miles of trail re-routes and four miles of trail repairs.
- Picnic Shelter A renovation.
- Addition of an ADA-accessible picnic area.

Picnic Shelter A at the top of Morrow Mountain is one of several park amenities set to close in mid-June for renovations.
Morrow Mountain’s group campsites and backpack camping, picnic shelters B and C near the Quarry Trail, and the community building will remain open, according to the state parks website. Additionally, the boathouse has begun opening on weekends only from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The renovations are funded by regular parks repair and renovation funds, Connect NC Bond funds, and the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, the release says.
