Grandfather Mountain State Park will begin charging fees and requiring reservations for backcountry camping as of June 1.
The park in Linville has 13 hike-in campsites along backcountry trails and, without a reservation system, hikers could not know beforehand whether a site would be available, Beatrice Murray, an administrative specialist for the park, says in a news release. The fees are consistent with those required for camping at other North Carolina State Parks.
Camping options at Grandfather Mountain State Park include 10 sites that accommodate up to six campers and will cost $15 per night, and three that accommodate seven to 12 campers, which will cost $35 a night.
The state parks’ reservations system is through Reserve America online and at 877-722-6762 by phone. Staff at Grandfather Mountain “strongly recommend” reserving sites before coming to the mountain, where phone and internet connections may not be reliable.
Backcountry areas of Grandfather Mountain opened as a state park in 2009 and camping fees were waived as park operations were established. Camping was registered on a first-come-first-served basis with no advance reservations available except for the Daniel Boone campsite.
