Department of Defense Camping in North Carolina

The U.S. Army’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Web site has a guide to six Department of Defense family campgrounds in North Carolina, and there are several additional tents-only campgrounds available we also provide information about below. In general, these facilities are available to active duty, reserve or retired military, National Guard, or Department of Defense civilians.

Elizabeth City Lodging aka Weeksville Campsites, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City. (Locator Map)
14 RV sites with water, sewer and electricity; three cabins with one bedroom, loft and screened porch (sleeps six); and six fully furnished two-bedroom mobile homes (sleeps six). Boat and camping equipment rentals. Beach, boat ramp, gas, picnic area, playgrounds, gymnasium, indoor pool, fitness trail, driving range, country store and Coast Guard exchange available. 16 RV sites with water, sewer and electricity; 10 overflow sites without hookups. 50 primitive tent sites. 26 cottages, 15 mobile homes and River Marsh Landing, with two suites and six rooms (children under 12 not allowed), are also available. Area also has a boat ramp and fishing pier on the Cape Fear River, beach access, swimming pool, recreation hall, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, beach house bar and grill, convenience store, gift shop and kennels. Camping equipment can be rented. RVs $18 per day, $126 per week. Tent camping is $10 per day, $8 November through March. Additional rates vary. (910) 458-6546. The Fort Fisher rec area closes the second weekend of October each year to host the Pleasure Island Seafood, Blues & Jazz Festival.

Hancock Marina. Rental spaces available for boats and trailers. $5 per foot/month (28 ft. minimun); $60 extra per month to live onboard. $1 per foot/day. Dry storage: $2 per foot/month ($35 minimum).
Oak Grove Recreation Area. Campground No. 1 has a small canoe/kayak launch, pavilion, picnic table, grill and room for 10 campers. Campground No. 2 has two small boat docks and a launch, three pavilions, three picnic tables, three grills and room for 50 campers.
Pelican Point RV Park. 30 sites with water, sewer, electricity, cablevision, wi-fi. Flush toilets, showers, laundry, lounge, store. $25 per day, $150 per week, $550 per month April through October; $20 daily, $125 weekly, $450 monthly off-season.
Tent camping for free at picnic areas Bartlett Pond, Duck Pond, Lonetree Point. They each have bathrooms with running water and other amenities.

Onslow Beach Recreational Area. (Locator Map) 26 RV sites and 15 tent sites with water, sewage, electricity, cable TV and laundry. The area also has cottages, cabanas and trailers for rent. Camping is $15 per day. Additional rates (on the Web page above) vary. Reservations may be made 30 days in advance. Note that Onslow Beach’s Web site and the Army’s MWR site have conflicting information. (910) 450-7502.

(Campground rules/details) 31 RV sites, 22 with water, sewer and electricity and nine with water and electricity. Bath house, showers, dump station available. Undesignated tent sites. Eight cabins with two rooms (one double bed and one set of children’s bunk beds), one cabin with three bedrooms (two double beds and one set of children’s bunk beds). Cabins have electricity, refrigerator, small microwave, air conditioning and heat. Two-week limit for camping and cabin rental. RV sites: $18/$20 per day. Tent sites: $8, $15 with water and electricity. Cabins: $35 and $85 per night. (910) 396-5979.
